Electric Fall Fly @ Ives Estates

Since fall is here and we have no electric-only events in South Florida, I say we organize an UNorganized fun-fly in October. Since there are no big events on the weekend of Sunday the 3rd (according to AMA Event Calendar), many pilots should be able to attend. Even if 5 people show up, this should be a good way to meet new pilots and have a fun Sunday afternoon. I guess a good venue is Ives Estates Park in North Miami since it’s near the Broward/Dade county line and many of us fly there anyways.

There are never issues with the park officials about flying there and you should be aware that, since this is an unorganized event, there are no restrictions on type of model allowed there so you will most likely have to share the sky with gassers and larger models. Ives Estates is located at 1475 NE 205th Ter, Miami. There are no fees to enter the park. Please set up within the grassy area at the entrance of the park; to the left side (facing North, running East-West) at the right-turn; That’s where the park officials prefer us to fly. Coordinates to flying area: Google Map with detailed notes.

NOTE: You WILL NEED a 2.4 Ghz Radio to fly here. There is a lot of interference from communication towers in the area. Fly 72 at your own risk.

Fly Your Micros at The Gold Coast Roller Rink

Finally, there’s an indoor RC venue in Florida! The Gold Coast Roller Rink in Fort Lauderdale has opened its doors to the Gold Coast Indoor Radio Control Flyers; Florida’s only indoor RC club. The best part is there are no club fees; just a cover charge on each visit to the rink.

The events are on Thursdays and anyone is invited to fly micro-sized airplanes and helis. For more information you ccan visit the GCRR website at www.GoldCoastRCFlyers.com

How to Tweet to @rcfinder South Florida RC Twitter Group

@rcfinder is our very own South Florida Twitter resource for RC communication. It’s a Twitter group that lets any follower to post to it, allowing all other @rcfinder followers to receive the Tweet via their timeline and optionally via text message. We keep each-other updated by sharing events, videos, links, news and flying locations like parks, schools, etc.

You can post Tweets to @rcfinder, all you need to do is click “Follow” at twitter.com/rcfinder, then send a Direct Message (DM @rcfinder) to the group with your post.
Here’s an example Direct Message:

All is quiet in South Florida for the summer. Only a handful of RC events announced for the coming months and no swap meets yet. Time to build and build some more. More foam, please :) I need a slow bipe.

Flying Over the Lake [VIDEO]

Just got a MiniDV camera (MD80/B001) and shot a couple of videos this week over the lake here at The Moors in Miami Lakes.

More flying at the lake. This time the camera is mounted on a swivel mount on the side of the fuselage. The mount kept tilting right and down so this video sucks; a lot. At least it was a clear day and winds under 3 knots.

On-board video of my Hobbyzone Super Cub RC float plane flying from the lake at The Moors. Views of Opa-locka Airport (KOPF), SR828, Dade Christian Academy, Miami Lakes, Miami Gardens. The camera is a MD80/B001/YSB001 MiniDV camera from Hong Kong.

Went out again today and got more on-board video of my Hobbyzone Super Cub RC float plane flying from the lake at The Moors. I set up the camera on a wooden mount behind and 3 inches above the right float. I love the angle but the propeller kills it for me. I will not be using this location for the camera anymore.

End of 2009 Events in South Florida

I’ve added a few events coming to SFL in October, November and December. Included are the AMPS 50th Anniversary Festival on Halloween day and PBRCA’s Toys For Tots Fly-in in December. We can keep busy with other events like pylon racing and jets at Markham Park this November. Check it out in the Events Calendar.

Find Florida RC Events and Meetings using Twitter

The place is twitter.com/rcfinder and its purpose it to aid Florida Modelers in finding each other and setting up meeting at the spur of the moment. We can use our mobile devices to inquire to each other about when and where we’ll be flying or to sell parts and such.

Flying at Amelia Earhart
