The foamie jet is coming along nicely. I’ve finished gluing the wing and fuselage. The vertical stabilizer is on and all that’s left is to cut the elevons before the electronics and parts arrive. I must say: it looks sexy! I can’t wait to see it in the air.

A bit of sad news: HobbyKing.com has announced a new “V2″ radio system to replace my radio so I think that system is canned. The receivers are out of stock and don’t seem to be coming back in. I think it’s time to invest in some kind of modular radio.

Here’s a little ParkJet I’m designing with some inspiration from @LIPOPILOT‘s S-28 Shadow. It’s a clipped-wing delta jet with one vertical stabilizer and air-foil wings. I’ve never designed my own foamie so I’d like your input

I’ll use the airfoil technique I saw LIPOPILOT use on his S-28; two layers of foam board: one with the paper removed. The bottom of the wing is flat and still has the paper, while the top of the wing is paperless and curved to the shape of the airfoil. The curve is achieved by a dowel between the two layers of foam. This worked great for him and I hope it does for me as well.

I have designed a sort of air-cooling system to cool the electronics. I first saw this idea on the X-41 foamie by T3chDad. The air enters the nose of the plane much like in the post-WWII Migs and flows through a square funnel-shaped fuselage to exit out of two exhaust vents near the rear. I’m not sure of the effects of this on aerodynamics and wether it will affect the flight characteristics at all.

On paper, it seems like it would work but I’ve never done anything like it before so I’d like your input on this idea. I’ve attached a couple of sketches with notes I’ve done so far. You can use this as you please. I’d like to see something come nice built from it. I have never done any plans for foamies or even designed my own so this is all guesswork from experience with other plans and kits.

I’m going to build the fullsize templates and start putting them together and see where it goes from there.

Until recently, I often found myself itching for a quick flight on weekdays but nowhere near a suitable park to fly. I pass a couple of public schools and parks on my daily route to and from work and always wondered if I would be welcome to fly there. Back in April I decided to try my luck at a location very close to home.

On the corner of NW 67th Avenue and Miami Lakeway North in Miami Lakes is Miami Lakes Park; a Large field with six baseball diamonds and a few basketball courts. It’s 1150 feet long by 830 feet wide and surrounded by busy streets to the West and South, Miami Lakes Middle School to the East and a canal and shops to the North. The grass is less than two inches tall and there are about two dozen tall light posts scattered around. My favorite spot is the South-West corner diamond because it has the largest outfield with the least number of obstacles at 400 feet by 420 feet. It’s also close to parking and the furthest away from the schoolyard.

I take my ArtTech Pitts to Miami Lakes Park for 20 or 30 minutes once every week or so. The school has P.E. class on the North half of the park so I get curious students that stop what they’re doing to check out the Pitts; I wonder if that’ll be the reason I’m kicked out someday. Stay away from this park after 5 PM since there’s an after-school baseball program that starts around that time. Don’t fly over the streets; try to stay over the park’s airspace boundaries to avoid complaints from neighbors or park employees and to stay safe.

I invite you to try this park if you’re in the area and contact me if you do. Let me know about your flights and what you think of it. If you have a favorite park or public place to fly in let me know about it; I’d love to fly there too! Now, here’s a map to the park.

So I’m looking for someone (or sometwo) who flies RC and/or goes to RC events frequently around South Florida and would like to write for MAYDAY!RC.com on occasion. This needs to be an individual who is a competent writer with excellent spelling and grammar.

I can’t go to many events but would like to continue the goal of promoting RC flight in South Florida. I need someone who can take photos and/or video at events or parks, club meetings, etc. Anything RC related can make it into the website as long as it’s well written and interesting.

No need to apply, just email the article to me using the form below and, if it’s good, I’ll make your user account an Author account so you can submit the article. It will appear on the MAYDAY!RC website just as mine do. If you have any questions, please leave me a comment.

Thanks – Erwin

@rcfinder is our very own South Florida Twitter resource for RC communication. It’s a Twitter group that lets any follower to post to it, allowing all other @rcfinder followers to receive the Tweet via their timeline and optionally via text message. We keep each-other updated by sharing events, videos, links, news and flying locations like parks, schools, etc.

You can post Tweets to @rcfinder, all you need to do is click “Follow” at twitter.com/rcfinder, then send a Direct Message (DM @rcfinder) to the group with your post.
Here’s an example Direct Message:

Begin all tweets with “DM @rcfinder” and follow it with your message.
GroupTweet takes care of posting all Direct Messages received to the timeline in just minutes, like this:

Easy! If you enable Mobile Updates you receive all Tweets written to @rcfinder on your mobile device. So this opens up a new way to communicate amongst ourselves; you can now send your flying location to @rcfinder and others who see it can reply to you and possibly join you at the field.

Great. Enjoy it and if you have any questions contact @rcfinder or @maydayrc.

I put 3 Dave Brown 3-inch Lectra Lite wheels on. It turns very tightly. I flew it once but got no video of it.
Recently, I was discussing the T6a radio at the Super Cub Club so I decided to give it a try.

Recently, I was discussing the T6a radio at the Super Cub Club when the topic on flaperons came up. I decided to give it a try with my SC.

I started out with a servo on CH1 for the left aileron and a servo on CH6 for the right aileron. I programmed the first mix (MIX1) for standard ailerons as follows:

Mix Num: MIX 1

Source: CH1

Des: CH6

Up Rate: 100%

Down Rate: 100%

Switch: ON

If all you want is ailerons, this is where you can stop. Next, for flapperons, I used up the remaining mixes (MIX2 & MIX3). MIX2 for CH1 (Left Aileron) and MIX3 for CH6 (Right Aileron):

Mix Num: MIX 2

Source: VR B

Des: CH1

Up Rate: 75%

Down Rate: 75%

Switch: SW B

Mix Num: MIX 3

Source: VR B

Des: CH6

Up Rate: -75%

Down Rate: -75%%

Switch: SW B

This results in the ability to switch flaperons ON and OFF with Switch B (SW B) and adjust the angle of the flaperons by rotating Pot B (VR B).

There are many options and settings to play with here, including aileron differential; to read further, see the RCGroups.com post where I found the info I needed.
